A GamePigeon alternative that works on Android too

GamePigeon lives inside iMessage. A Playboard link opens in any browser, so iPhone, Android and laptop players can share one game.

The short version

If everyone in the chat has an iPhone and you mostly play 8-Ball or Cup Pong, keep GamePigeon. It runs inside iMessage and has arcade games we don't. The moment one friend is on Android, or you want to play on a laptop or from WhatsApp, send a Playboard link instead. Chess, Checkers, Reversi, Four in a Row, Sea Battle and Dots and Boxes all carry over.

Why people look for a GamePigeon alternative

GamePigeon came out in 2016 alongside iOS 10 and became a go-to way to play a quick game with someone you text. You open the Messages app drawer, pick a game, and it arrives in the conversation like a message. For a group chat full of iPhones, it's hard to beat.

The trouble starts when someone isn't on an iPhone. GamePigeon's App Store listing describes it as an app for iMessage only, and lists iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It has no Android version, which is why people search for "GamePigeon for Android". Your friend with a Samsung, your partner with a Pixel, the cousin in the family group chat: none of them can open the game you just sent.

The same goes for chats that don't live in iMessage at all. If your group talks on WhatsApp, Messenger or Discord, there's no GamePigeon button to press.

How to play the same games on Playboard

Playboard runs in the browser, so the invite is just a link, and a link works everywhere.

  1. Open the game you want, say Connect Four or Battleship.
  2. Press Play now, then Create playroom, then Copy link.
  3. Paste the link into whatever chat you're in: iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS, Discord or email.

Your friend taps it and the game opens in their browser, whether that's Safari on an iPhone, Chrome on Android or a laptop at work. Nobody installs anything or makes an account. The playroom has its own text chat for the trash talk, and when the match ends you can pick the next game without sending a new link.

What changes when you switch

It would be easy to pretend nothing changes. Some things do.

The game leaves the chat thread. With GamePigeon the game is a bubble in the conversation. With Playboard your friend taps a link and plays in the browser, then comes back to the chat when you're done.

Playboard is live. You play at the same time, like sitting at the same table. If your friend steps away, the match waits a few minutes for them. It isn't built for sending one move in the morning and getting the reply at lunch.

Some games stay behind. We don't have 8-Ball, Cup Pong, Mini Golf, Darts, Archery, Mancala, Gomoku, Crazy 8 or the word games, and we're not going to pretend a Battleship match is a substitute for a pool rematch. If those are what your group plays, GamePigeon is still the right app for iPhone-only chats.

Games GamePigeon doesn't have

What you gain is a deeper shelf of classics. Besides the six board games above, a playroom can run Backgammon, Go, Hearts, Gin Rummy, Ludo, Dominoes and American Mahjong, and every one of them has a bot when you're on your own.

Keep both

You don't have to choose. If your chat is all iPhones and someone wants pool, GamePigeon is right there. When the group chat includes an Android phone, or you're playing from a laptop, or the conversation lives on WhatsApp, send a Playboard link and everyone gets the same game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a GamePigeon for Android?

No. GamePigeon's App Store listing calls it an iMessage-only app and lists iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and its website doesn't mention Android. To play the same board games across iPhone and Android, use a game you share by link, like Playboard.

Can an iPhone and an Android phone play the same game on Playboard?

Yes. The game runs in the browser, so it doesn't matter what phone either of you has. One of you can even be on a laptop.

Can we play from a WhatsApp chat?

Yes. Start a playroom, copy the link and paste it into WhatsApp like any other message. Your friend taps it and joins in their browser. It works the same in Messenger, Telegram, Discord, SMS or iMessage.

Do we have to download anything or make an account?

No. Neither of you installs an app or signs up. The link is all your friend needs.

Does Playboard have 8-Ball, Cup Pong or Word Hunt?

No. Playboard only has board, card, tile and puzzle games, so for pool, cup pong and the word games GamePigeon is still the place to go.

Can I play while my friend is busy?

Not really. A playroom is live: you both play at the same time, and if your friend steps away the match waits about three minutes. When nobody is around, every multiplayer game here has a bot you can play on your own.

GamePigeon is a trademark of its owner. Playboard is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by GamePigeon.
