Play Connect Four Online with a Friend — Free, No Sign-Up
Playboard lets you play Connect Four (also known as Connect 4 or Four in a Row) online with a friend, wherever they are. One of you opens a room and sends the link; the other opens it in their browser and sits down at the same board. No accounts, no app, nothing to download.
You both see the same grid in real time, and every disc lands on both screens straight away.
How to Start a Connect 4 Game with a Friend
- Open the game — go to Connect Four, press Play now and choose Create playroom
- Copy the link — press Copy link to grab the address of your private room
- Send it to your friend — paste it into a message, a group chat or an email
- Play — your friend opens the link and the game starts as soon as they join
Pasted into WhatsApp, iMessage or Discord, the link previews as an invite to the game. Every friend game happens in a playroom, a private room with its own text chat where you can pick the next game when this one ends.
Plays on Any Device
Connect Four on Playboard runs in the browser on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops. One of you can be on an iPhone and the other on a Windows laptop — the game works the same on both.
If someone's connection drops mid-game, they have a few minutes to reload the page or open the link again and carry on. After that, the game ends.
Why Connect Four Works So Well Online
- Quick games. The grid holds only 42 discs, and most games are decided long before it fills. Several rounds fit into a coffee break.
- Nothing to set up. The board is always the same 7×6 grid and Red always moves first, so there are no house rules to agree on.
- Easy to learn, hard to master. The rules take a minute, but good play is about the centre column, double threats and noticing which square your disc opens up for your opponent.
- Deeper than it looks. Connect Four was solved in 1988: the first player can force a win by opening in the centre column and playing perfectly. Between friends, nobody plays perfectly.
Rules Overview
Connect Four is played on an upright grid of 7 columns and 6 rows. Players take turns dropping a disc into a column, and it falls to the lowest empty space. The first player to line up four discs — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins. If all 42 spaces fill up with no line of four, the game is a draw.

Check Your Moves with the Connect 4 Solver
Lost a close game? Drop the same discs into the free Connect 4 solver, column by column. After every move it shows who is winning with perfect play and highlights the strongest column to play next. Copy link to position puts the board in the URL, so you can send it to your friend and settle the argument.
Play Solo Against the Computer
No friend free right now? Choose Play solo and take on the computer as Red or Yellow. The bot takes any win it sees and blocks your immediate threats, but it does not plan far ahead, which makes it a good place to practise double threats. For a human opponent, Quick match pairs you with another player online.
