Playing With Friends (Playrooms)
What is a Playroom?
A Playroom is a private online game room where you can play board games with friends. Each Playroom has a unique link that you can share so friends can join instantly.
How do I play Chess or Othello with friends?
Choose Chess or Othello on Playboard.gg, create a Playroom, copy the Playroom link, send it to your friend, and both players ready up to start playing. No downloads. No signups.
Can I create a private game room for friends?
Yes. Playrooms are private by default. Only people with your Playroom link can join your game.
Do my friends need an account to join?
No. Your friends can join your Playroom and play with you instantly in their browser.
Why do we both need to "Ready Up" before playing?
Both players confirm they are ready so the match starts fairly. If someone refreshes or leaves, readiness resets so both players can start together.
Quick Match (Find Someone to Play With)
What is Quick Match?
Quick Match lets you play with friends or new opponents instantly by matching you with another player who wants to play the same game.
How does Quick Match work?
When you choose Quick Match, Playboard.gg searches for another player for the same game. If found, you are placed in a Playroom together, both players ready up, and the game begins. If no one is available yet, you'll wait until another player joins.
Can I use Quick Match if I don't have friends online?
Yes. Quick Match is perfect for solo players who want to play multiplayer games with others.
Can I leave Quick Match while waiting?
Yes. You can cancel and return to game selection at any time.
Solo and Friends Together
Can I start playing alone and let friends join later?
Yes. You can create a Playroom and wait for friends, share the Playroom link later, or use Quick Match to find an opponent. You are never locked into waiting.
Can I play silently without chat?
Yes. Playing with friends does not require voice or chat. Communication is optional.
Fair Play & Game Rules
Are games fair when playing with friends?
Yes. All moves are validated by the server. Illegal moves are blocked so games stay fair for both players.
What happens if my friend disconnects?
If your opponent disconnects, a short forfeit countdown may award you the win automatically. If you disconnect, rejoin quickly to avoid forfeiting.
Progress & Sessions
Is my game history saved when playing with friends?
Your match history and achievements are tracked during your current session. Long-term accounts and history across devices will be added in future updates.
Troubleshooting
What if my friend can't join my Playroom?
Make sure the Playroom link is correct, both players are using a modern browser, and the Playroom has not expired. If needed, create a new Playroom and resend the link.
What if the game board won't load?
Refresh the page or reconnect. If the Playroom expires, create a new one and invite your friend again.

Do I need to download anything to play with friends?

What browsers are supported?
Playboard.gg works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
