Play Othello with Friends Online

Play Othello Online with a Friend — Free, No Sign-Up

Playboard lets you play Othello (also known as Reversi) online with any friend, anywhere in the world. One player opens a game and shares the link — the other joins instantly in their browser. No accounts, no app stores, no waiting rooms.

Both players see the same board in real time. Every move is reflected immediately on both screens.

How to Start a Multiplayer Othello Game

  1. Open the game — click Play Now and select multiplayer mode
  2. Copy the room link — a unique URL is generated for your session
  3. Send it to your friend — paste it into a message, chat, or email
  4. Play — your friend opens the link and the game begins

The whole process takes about 30 seconds. You can share the link over WhatsApp, iMessage, Discord, email — whatever you already use. No separate account needed on either side.

Plays on Any Device

Othello on Playboard works in the browser on desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile. Both players can be on completely different devices and operating systems — one on a phone, one on a laptop — and the game works the same either way.

If one player loses their connection mid-game, they can rejoin using the same link. The board state is preserved.

Why Othello is a Great Game to Play Online with Friends

Othello (Reversi) suits online play particularly well for a few reasons:

  • Short games. A full game of Othello typically takes 10–20 minutes. You can easily fit a match into a lunch break or a free evening.
  • No setup. Unlike some board games, there is nothing to configure before you start — the board is always the same 8×8 grid with the same four starting discs.
  • Easy to learn, hard to master. The rules take a few minutes to understand, but the strategy runs deep. Corners are crucial, disc count in the midgame is often misleading, and controlling your opponent's moves matters more than raw aggression.
  • Every game is different. A small opening choice can lead to completely different board positions, so rematches rarely feel repetitive.

Rules Overview

Othello is played on an 8×8 board. Players alternate placing discs, black side or white side facing up. Each move must trap at least one opponent disc in a straight line — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — between the newly placed disc and another disc of your colour. All trapped discs flip immediately.

If a player has no legal move, they pass. The game ends when neither player can move, or when the board is full. The player with the most discs wins.

Play Solo Against the Computer

No friend available right now? Switch to single-player mode to practice against the AI. The computer plays a solid game — strong enough to push you — without being impossible to beat. It is a good way to learn openings and test strategies before your next match against a real opponent.
