Play Backgammon Online with a Friend — Free, No Sign-Up

Playboard lets you play backgammon online with a friend, wherever they are. One player creates a room and shares the link; the other opens it in their browser and takes the second seat. No accounts, no app stores.

Both players see the same board in real time, and each side's pip count sits next to the player names, so you always know who is ahead in the race.

How to Start a 2-Player Backgammon Game

  1. Open the game — press Play now on the backgammon page
  2. Choose Create playroom — the option marked "Invite friends with a link"
  3. Copy the link — press Copy link to grab your room's unique address
  4. Send it to your friend — paste it into WhatsApp, iMessage, Discord or any other chat
  5. Roll — your friend opens the link and the game begins

In chat apps the link shows up as an invite to a game of backgammon, so your friend knows what they are opening. The room is a playroom with built-in text chat: when a game ends you can play again, or switch to another game without sending a new link.

No friend around? Choose Quick match instead, and Playboard looks for another player who wants a game of backgammon right now.

Plays on Any Device

Backgammon on Playboard runs in the browser on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops. Each player uses their own screen — one on a phone, the other on a laptop — and the game plays the same on both.

If someone's connection drops or they reload by accident, they can reopen the same link in the same browser and carry on. The room waits a few minutes for them before it ends the game.

Why Backgammon Works So Well Online

  • Short games. A single game fits into a coffee break.
  • The dice keep it close. Luck matters in any one game, so a newer player can beat an experienced friend. Over a series, the stronger player still comes out ahead.
  • Every roll is a decision. Hit or play safe, hold an anchor or run, build a prime or race home.
  • No arguments about the rules. The board only lets you make legal moves.

Backgammon Rules Overview

Each player has 15 checkers on a board of 24 points, and the two sides move in opposite directions. You roll two dice and move by each number separately; a double gives four moves. Landing on a single opposing checker, a blot, hits it and sends it to the bar, from where it must re-enter in the opponent's home board before its owner can move anything else.

Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board, you bear them off. The first player to bear off every checker wins. Games on Playboard are played without the doubling cube.

Play Solo Against the Computer

No one to play with right now? Choose Play solo, pick White or Black, and play against the bot. It hits blots, makes points and bears off like a real opponent: good practice before your next game against a friend.
